How We Research
Every guide on LucidLocker starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our garage and shop light guides, that means the size of your space, the height of your ceiling and how you want the lights to hang and plug in.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your space
A one-car garage, a two-car garage and a big workshop need different lights. A fixture made for a low ceiling is the wrong pick for a tall one.
We check the fixture length, the brightness in lumens and the mounting style the maker lists. When your ceiling height or garage size limits the choice, we say what to look for.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at lumens, watts, color temperature, fixture length and how many fixtures link together. We also check whether the light plugs in or hardwires, the damp-location and cold ratings, any UL or ETL mark the maker lists, and for work lights the battery platform and run time.
Barrina, Hykolity, Sunco, DeWalt and Milwaukee describe their lights in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a light. We look for patterns, like flicker, dead fixtures, cords that are too short, linking trouble and batteries that run down fast.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Packs often come in several sizes under one name, so we check each model and pack size, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any light with a known recall. Several high bay lights have been recalled in recent years, so we check those against the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission recall list.
When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every light we cover.
Electrical work carries risk, so we point you to the maker's manual and a licensed electrician for hardwired fixtures, new circuits or anything inside a wall or ceiling. We never call a light safe, and we label maker claims as the maker's claims.
We make no health claims about light color or brightness.
